Dutch ships heading to Bonaire to trade on salt were helped toward the coast by high, slim orange pyramids that acted as "light less lighthouses". In the nearby, the slaves that worked in the salines had their insalubre, minute masonry huts. Both are nowadays historic landmarks on Bonaire southeast coast.
